Fragile ecology is one the most common metaphors defining the Tibetan Plateau, based (consciously or not) on the foundational Anthropocene assumption that all human interventions are destructive. Tibetans find this characterisation puzzling. For nomad gatherers of nature’s seasonal productivity, the land is bountiful. While the weather is unpredictable, the seasons highly variable, Tibetans have not considered this problematic, or their lives marginal. Tibetan proverbs, widely known and used, consistently describe Tibetan landscapes as beautiful, and alive, with innumerable local gods of earth and water who need to be respected, as they can get irritated and cause disruptions.
Far from being fragile, the grasses and sedges of the endless grassland are deeply rooted, keeping most of their biomass below the surface, away from grazing pressure, gales and blizzards. The grassland is resilient and will crowd out wild medicinal herbs without curation. The rivers, Asia’s biggest, wind slowly through the grasslands, braiding and spreading out into water meadows.
The Tibetan Plateau is young land, still rising, prone to landslides, earthquakes and gelifluction flows of sodden earth; all reasons to respect a powerful energy-charged land, rather than diminish Tibet as fragile. Tibetans have seldom thought of the landscape as delicate. Rather, it is powerful, and needs to be respected, not extracted and exploited, which is asking for trouble.
